There is no single factor more important than ‘cluster injuries’ — a multitude of injured players at a single position group — when it comes to betting NFL Preseason games. And the Jets have a SERIOUS cluster injury problem in their secondary this week. I am recommending a 3% play on the Atlanta Falcons in NFL Preseason Week 2.

Event: (403) New York Jets at (404) Atlanta Falcons
Sport/League: NFL
Date/Time: August 15, 2019 7PM EDT
Play: Atlanta Falcons -125

The Jets’ top four (only four?) cornerbacks this week will be Darryl Roberts, Brian Poole, Parry Nickerson and undrafted rookie Kyron Brown. Head coach Adam Gase isn’t exactly giving us a ‘bet-on’ quote here:

Gase: “Right now, we’ll just keep rotating guys in there. We’re just going to keep competing. That’s what we have to do… Some young guys are going to have to step up. They’re going to have to play well.”

Week 4 of the preseason is fairly random. The first three weeks of the preseason are not. Gase’s teams in Miami and now New York have gone 1-6 SU and ATS in non-Week 4 preseason games over the past three years; not a coach who is particularly concerned about wins and losses. And it’s surely worth noting that Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams didn’t blitz like crazy against the Giants last week

Dan Quinn doesn’t care about wins and losses in August either – hence his decision to go for it from his own 16 yard line on a 4th and nine with two minutes remaining in Week 1 against the Dolphins; a decision that cost Falcons bettors dearly. But Atlanta has the QB rotation we’re looking for at this time of year – Matt Schaub, Matt Simms and Kurt Benkert are a bet-on trio in August, especially against a very banged up team that can’t afford any more injuries in the secondary.

When it comes to short favorites in the preseason, I almost always play them on the moneyline – we don’t want late game, fairly random, two-point conversion drama affecting our wager. And given Quinn’s ugly recent preseason track record, this is a VERY cheap moneyline to lay in a game the Falcons are primed to win. Take the Atlanta Falcons on the moneyline!
