College Basketball Line Report: Vols -17 vs Gamecocks
The NCAA Division I Basketball Selection Committee positioned the Duke Blue Devils as the No. 1 overall seed in its initial tournament rankings over the weekend. Both the AP and Coaches poll voters kept the SEC Tennessee Volunteers as their rankings. College Basketball Line Report: Vols -17 vs Gamecocks.
The Vols earned the majority of the first-place votes in both polls released Monday, remaining ahead of Duke for fourth straight week. No. 3 ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs and No. 4 Virginia Cavaliers round out the NCAA’s initial top seeds in their early projections.
Tennessee (22-1, 10-0 SEC) moved to the No. 1 spot in the AP poll after Duke (21-2, 9-1 ACC) lost to Syracuse in mid-January. And while the Vols continued to hold serve in the polls, by winning and stretching their current streak to 18 straight victories, they will get their biggest test of the season Saturday in Lexington against tradition rich Kentucky.
Committee chair Bernard Muir said the decision for the top overall seed in their latest National Championship rankings was nip-and-tuck. It was Duke’s victory in their rematch with Virginia 81-71 on Saturday that was the deciding factor. The Blue Devils needed overtime to beat the Cavaliers the first meeting but were without injured point guard Tre Jones in the affair. The Jones led Devils connected on 13 of 21 from the 3-point arc in the school’s double-digit victory this past Saturday in Charlottesville.
