NHL Free Pick: Montreal Canadiens at Boston Bruins

The Montreal Canadiens and the Boston Bruins hold one of the longest and most exciting rivalries in the entire National Hockey League, these two original six teams know each other very very well and meet tonight in Boston at TD Garden.

Event: (81) Montreal Canadiens at (82) Boston Bruins
Date/Time: January 14, 2019 7PM EST
Play: Total Over 5.5 (-118)

A lot of the time a rivalry means high scoring and action packed but they has certainly not been the case between these two teams recently as they’ve gone 1-8-1 to the UNDER in their last 10 meetings. These teams have seemed to buckle down defensively as well as some stellar goaltending to really keep the score low in the past several meetings, but that will NOT be the case tonight. The Montreal Canadiens are quite possibly having one of their best goal production seasons in several years, a season where they’re not just relying on a few people to produce, the supporting cast throughout every line for the Canadiens has really stepped things up and that’s led to them averaging 3 goals per game this season.

The Bruins (averaging 2.90 goals per game) have been scorching hot as of late. The Bruins have won 7 of their last 10 games and have scored at least 3 goals in 7 of those games. The Bruins are now nearly completely healthy besides forward Joakim Nordstrom being out with injury, however they do have Patrice Bergeron back in action, Zdeno Chara, Charlie McAvoy and many key pieces are finally all back together for the Bruins. The Bruins hold one of the best top lines in the league with Marchand, Pastrnak and Bergeron but I would also argue that they have won of the best top 6’s in the entire league as well.

The Montreal Canadiens have seen great production from Max Domi and Jonathan Drouin recently and they seem to really be grasping the two way game that head coach Claude Julien is preaching about. The Canadiens have been using their speed to their advantage recently and really seem to be finding success on their power play now that defencemen and newly named captain Shea Webber is back from injury. In this game we are being provided a 5.5 total that seems to be abnormal these days where the norm is now 6. I say both teams can put up at least 3 goals which will lead us to a 5-3, 4-3 type game.

Recommendation: Take the Over 5.5 Goals
