This highly anticipated rematch between former UFC champ Stipe Miocic and former 2-division (and current HW champ) Daniel Cormier is finally taking place Saturday night at the Honda Center in Anaheim.

Event: (24401) Stipe Miocic vs. (24402) Daniel Cormier
Sport/League: MMA
Date/Time: Saturday, August 17, 2019
Play: Stipe Miocic +114

Stipe Miocic: 18-3 (14-2 KO record, 0 subs)
Daniel Cormier: 22-1, 1 NC (10-0 KO record, 5 subs)

We last saw the Champ-Champ Cormier in the Octagon back in November in a lopsided win over fan favorite Derrick Lewis. After that defense, Cormier relinquished the Light Heavyweight belt and took time to have back surgery. During that time, many wondered if the 40-year old former Olympian would retire for good or possible hold out for a big money fight against part-time WWE star Brock Lesnar. This is the first bout for the active Cleveland firefighter Miocic since his KO loss last July giving Cormier the Heavyweight strap. That defeat has led to many critics unfairly questioning the legacy of Stipe, who quietly has risen through the ranks as one of the best UFC Heavyweights of All-Time with 3 consecutive title defenses, all against some very dangerous opponents like Alistair Overeem & Francis Ngannou.

This fight will be a quick one, much like their first go-round. However, I don’t see the Champion retaining the belt. Both of these men have dangerous striking power, and since everyone knows that Cormier has the edge on the ground as a world-class wrestler, Stipe will make sure to avoid even backpedaling the wrong way. I also feel that the layoff & recovery time for DC, who also does commentary for many UFC events on ESPN, might have been a bit too long. Every fighter has a window of time regarding their peak performance and I really believe that Cormier has reached the end of that frame. While on record, Daniel has never been KO’d in his career, that’s only because the 2nd bout he had with Jon Jones was turned into a no-contest. Miocic will be able to claim that first offical KO on Saturday and reclaim his throne as the king of the Heavyweight Division.

Pick: Stipe Miocic (ML +114)
